I have lived through quite a few if these in NY.  But DC is not prepared for such things. This would be a heavy dusting for Buffalo, NY.

"More than 1ft (12in, 30.5cm) of snow has fallen only 13 times since 1870
Heaviest on record is 28in (71cm) in January 1922
Worst snowfall is believed to have hit in 1772, before records began, with as much as 3ft"

I heard this morning Dulles Airport had 34 inches of snow as of this morning.  Downtown DC has had about 17 inches.

what struck me most about this storm was the the strong NW flow at all levels that kept the storm not only to the south and east of Connecticut, but created a sharp cut off line of snow.
I watched the radar and the heavy snow was just south of Long Island, and was sharply cut off.
The conditions in coastal CT were as such. Fairly low cloud deck, sustained winds at 10-15 MPH, a relitively high humidity, and temps around 30. Some light snow did fall as virga, never reaching the ground.

We dodged another bullet, and I'm beginning to think that March will produce several heavy snow events (strictly a hunch at this point). past trends are that when we get few snow events in Dec-Feb, March has produced some of our largest snowstorms  Shocked

And it Continues.

Morgantown, W.Va. (AP) -- With nine counties under blizzard warnings, emergency officials across West Virginia are worried that snow- and ice-crusted trees will snap and pull down more power lines.

Allegheny power says 10,715 customers in West Virginia are without power this afternoon.

National Guard troops are going door to door to check on residents in Monongalia, Marshall, Wetzel and Marion counties.

Phil Howard with the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management says roads across the state "are a nightmare" and and will likely remain that way for 24 to 36 hours.

Blizzard warning are in effect for Berkeley, Jefferson, Morgan, Hardy, Grant, Pendleton, Mineral, Preston and Tucker Counties, with predictions of up to a foot of fresh snow in some places.
